Mangrove Snapper Fishing
The best mangrove snapper fishing of the year occurs in July. If you enjoy a delicious meal from your own catch, these fish are perfect targets for your fishing charter. During the summer months, mangrove snapper flood into Tampa and Sarasota Bay, and it’s common to limit out on snapper. For example, this morning we had a four-man limit of mangrove snapper by 7:30 AM, totaling 20 snapper.
Mangrove snapper have a minimum size requirement of 10 inches, and we are allowed to keep five per person, not including the captain. Many people ask what my favorite way to cook fish is, and I always recommend blackening it with a seasoning called “Redfish Magic,” which you can find at Publix. Another great option for your fresh catch is to take it to either The Waterfront or The Feast, two fantastic restaurants that will cook your fish for you!
Snook Fishing
The snook fishing in July is always top-notch, as they are still grouped up together in big numbers, and there’s always a lot of big female snook around that start to bite very well as they get closer to the end of the spawn. July is a great month to try and get your trophy 40-inch snook, and I’m expecting to see a few of those make their way into the boat this month. We like to fish the beaches, passes, and mangrove shorelines with a lot of water movement.. The afternoon outgoing tides, once most of the other charter guides get off the water, are killer trips with the low water tightening the snook up into tight groups. We mostly use live pilchards with the smaller fry bait working best to get the snook fired up, with the occasional dead bait working well on the slower days.
Tarpon Fishing
July is one of my favorite months for fishing for juvenile tarpon around marinas, bridges, and specific areas where these fish like to hang out before venturing into open waters. There are also some larger, spawned-out tarpon still lingering around the local sandbars at this time of year, and they can be quite active without the constant pressure they experience during May and June. These bigger fish tend to feed on live threadfin and crabs, depending on the tide and time of day. It’s important to be stealthy and make the most of the one good cast you may get at them. Targeting juvenile tarpon in the early mornings with live pilchards, threadfin, or mullet can be a lot of fun.
Book Your July Anna Maria Island Fishing Adventure
There are many species of fish that we catch in July, but I wanted to highlight the three main ones! We will also be targeting permit and goliath grouper on certain days and tides. If there’s a specific fish you want to catch to check off your bucket list, feel free to ask me if it’s something we can accommodate!
I am looking forward to fishing with both new and returning clients throughout July. While most of our mornings are fully booked, we still have plenty of afternoon slots available. If you really prefer a morning trip, I have a great network of fishing guides and can ensure you’re matched with a guide who will take care of you just as I would!
