Any time you drive over the bridges to visit our little slice of paradise, you’ll get a glimpse of all the incredible and varied inshore fishing possibilities we have in and around the Sarasota Bay and the Intracoastal Waterway. Grass flats, mangrove forests, inlets, streams, canals—you name it, we can fish it.
But sometimes you just want to get away from it all. And that’s when we can head offshore and have fishing adventures with no land in sight. When you’re looking to book a Gulf fishing charter, Anna Maria Island makes for an excellent jumping-off point for going into the great unknown.
Of course, the Gulf isn’t really unknown for some of us. I’ve been fishing these waters most of my life, so even out there, I’ve got some favorite spots. And this is the perfect time of year for me to take you to them and show you what’s biting!

If you’ve spent your whole fishing career in lakes and streams, then heading offshore in the Gulf is a whole other world. First we get to put the throttle down and motor through the waves. Then, depending on where we are and what we’re fishing for, we can either drop anchor, cut the engine and drift, or troll along at a chill speed.
Whatever technique we use, you’d be amazed at how peaceful it is out there. Even on our most peaceful days fishing inshore, you’re bound to hear something from the land and/or other folks who are out on the water. Where Do Offshore AMI Charters Go?
You name it, we can fish it. But there are a few sweet spots I’m looking for, depending on the season and the fish. Depth matters, but so does what’s down there. The bottom could be soft sand or hard with rock, or there might be a reef or a ledge. And one of the best places to fish is shipwrecks. Not only are shipwrecks popular with many fish species, they’re also a great conversation starter and something fun to tell your friends about!
I’ll also pay attention to what’s happening with the tide as well as the current so we have a great sense of what kind of environment we’re dropping our lines into.
Offshore Fishing Techniques
Again, it depends on what species we’re fishing for. I’ll make sure we’ve got the right tackle and bait for the situation, and then we’ve got three primary approaches:
- Drop anchor: This lets us pick a great spot and stay there.
- Cut engine and drift: This is for when we want to move with the wind and the current.
- Troll: Trolling provides a moving target for those big predators to go after.
