Fishing Charters Anna Maria Island: Hogfish Edition

In this Anna Maria Island Fishing blog, I will discuss the highly sought-after Hogfish! There has been a lot of talk about these incredible fish over the past few years, and they are becoming a very popular target for many reasons: in my opinion, they are the best fish to eat, they fight incredibly hard, and they are just a unique fish to catch.

What makes the hogfish so good to eat?

Hogfish are considered one of the best fish to eat when talking about what we catch on my Fishing Charters in Anna Maria Island because of their white, flaky, and flavorful meat. The hogfish only eat crustaceans like crabs, shrimp, and other tasty species that add flavor to their meat. If a fish only eats tasty species that we would eat, like crabs and shrimp, then there is a good chance that the fish is going to taste amazing as well! The meat on a hogfish is as white as snow, and it melts in your mouth when you take a bite. If you’re coming down to the area and looking to book an Anna Maria Island Charter Fishing trip, then you have a great chance of catching a Hogfish!

Where and when do you catch hogfish?

On my Charter fishing trips, we fish for hogfish from October till March. It’s best right before the water gets super cold and when it starts to warm up a little. The prime time is just before the transition from fall to winter and as winter begins to turn into spring, when hogfish become really active. During this season, we typically catch 5-10 hogfish per trip, making for an amazing day! The great thing about these hogfish trips is the variety of other fish we catch while fishing for hogfish. On my hogfish trips, it’s almost always a fish or a bite every time you cast, making it perfect for families new to the sport as it offers a fantastic first fishing experience. We catch these hogfish on big structures like wrecks, sunken boats, public reefs, and man-made structures that attract fish. We also catch them on rocky or sandy bottoms by dropping pieces of shrimp and crab repeatedly, weaving out the other fish until we find the hogfish. Fall, winter, and early spring are the best times for local families in the Bradenton, Sarasota, Longboat Key, and surrounding areas to book an Anna Maria Island Charter Fishing trip. We can fill a cooler with hogfish, mangrove snapper, porgies, and my favorite, the Key West grunts! It’s a perfect Christmas gift for your children, father, mother, or friend, and it will be an experience you’ll never forget!

Do Hogfish Fight Hard?

Hogfish are very fun to catch and fight extremely hard! They fight similar to a gag grouper, trying to break you off on ledges, structures, or caves where we are fishing. You definitely want to be on your toes when fishing for hogfish! They bite differently than many other species—they poke at the bait much longer than most fish, making it hard to get them on the hook due to their long snouts. That’s a good reason to book a Fishing Charter in Anna Maria Island so you can learn the proper techniques for hooking these hogfish and pulling them out of the structure. We treat these hogfish as trophies, with many people getting them mounted or having a skull mount made so they will never forget the giant hogfish they caught on one of my Anna Maria Island Fishing Charters. These fish are truly unique, with incredible color and line patterns on their heads. They can be bright orange, have orange and white stripes, or sometimes appear very pink. They look very exotic, and you’ll be in awe when you see one come up from the bottom!

Hogfish Popularity With Your Anna Maria Charter Fishing Excursion

With the increasing popularity of hogfish for fishing charters in Anna Maria Island, largely due to their delicious white, flaky, and flavorful meat, which is attributed to their diet of crustaceans. The best time to catch hogfish is from October to March, particularly during the transition from fall to winter and as winter turns to spring, where anglers can expect to catch 5-10 hogfish per trip, along with a variety of other species. Hogfish offer an exciting challenge for anglers, fighting similarly to gag grouper and requiring specific techniques to hook due to their long snouts, making a guided charter highly beneficial for an unforgettable and trophy-worthy fishing experience.
